Our approach

We value lived experience more than our own expertise

Wherever possible, the people who are directly experiencing injustice in trade lead our work.

Local people bring knowledge, skills and energy to the table, while we bring resources, ideas and connections. It’s an aspirational, equal partnership that is committed to positive change.

Many non-profits give things away - like food, medicine, tools and seeds. While this is great in many ways, the power is always in the hands of the giver.

Decisions on how to solve problems are made far away from the communities who are experiencing those issues.

True, long-term change requires a different approach.

The traditional approach

What we do

We partner with people who are experiencing injustice in trade - as much as possible, they take the lead and make decisions.

Together we use the power of trade to solve real life problems.

We build and make use of local skills wherever possible - until our support is no longer needed at all.

How we do it

  • We invest in ways to deepen people’s ability to take control of their lives and livelihoods. That means supporting local people’s collectives and helping to nurture the systems that support them. We also respect and restore indigenous and contextual wisdom, encouraging communities to set their own priorities.

  • We challenge the wider trade system and work to hold power to account, including governments, big businesses, investors and financial institutions. We highlight the social responsibilities of organisations involved in trade and continue to build our network of campaigners and a stronger voice.

  • We challenge the powerful to ensure everybody benefits from trade, particularly the farmers, artisans and workers who often have the least power while being under the most pressure to deliver profit. We build and strengthen the case for human rights and hold decision makers to account through highlighting exploitative and damaging practices.

  • All citizens have a role to play in transforming trade. We use traditional campaigning techniques, alongside social media and other context-specific tactics to engage with citizens on the need for change, building support and encouraging action.

  • Transform Trade has always been a pioneer in pushing the need to make trade just and equal by sharing best practices and championing the issues. In the future, we will take this to the next level by not only pioneering through our own work, but also identifying good business models and practice that put people at the heart of business and trading operations. We will build the narrative for a people-centred trading system, which goes beyond fair trade and includes climate justice. We will lead these conversations, demonstrating what good, climate-just and people-centred trade looks like.

  • We can’t drive change alone. We don’t have all the skills, resources, or power to do that. So we seek out and collaborate with organisations, networks and social movements who share our goals. We will join and strengthen networks, alliances and spaces at national, regional and global levels, working wherever we can help to bring about change.
